The Agave Ferdinandi-Regis, also known as the "King of the Agaves," is an extraordinary, slow-growing beauty. Its open rosette of triangular, blue-green leaves with characteristic white markings gives it an elegant appearance. The leaf edges are dark red-brown and thornless, making this agave a rare gem among its kind.
This plant comes from my personal agave collection – a unique specimen – and has been sustainably cultivated without excessive fertilization, ensuring it remains particularly robust and resilient. It thrives in a warm, sunny location but can tolerate some shade during the hottest summer months.
The Agave Ferdinandi-Regis is not fully hardy and should be overwintered at temperatures between 5 and 10°C with only occasional watering. However, at my location (450m above sea level), it has withstood temperatures as low as -5°C without frost damage, provided it remains completely dry.
In spring and summer, water well, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings. In winter, it requires minimal watering. It is potted in a self-mixed, well-draining organic substrate that provides optimal growing conditions.
For healthy growth, fertilizing twice a year – in April and July – with a potassium-rich, water-soluble fertilizer is sufficient. Due to its slow growth, repotting is only necessary every two to three years.
This rare agave thrives best in well-ventilated, dry environments. In frost-free regions, it can also be cultivated outdoors.
