Agave horrida, also known as Mexcalmetl, is a small to medium-sized agave with symmetrical individual rosettes that are 30 to 60 centimetres high and 60 to 90 centimetres wide.
The leaves are medium to dark green and have large, long, often recurved brown teeth along the leaf edges, which fade to grey with age.
The plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil as well as occasional to infrequent watering. It is heat-tolerant and reliably hardy down to around -5°C.

Agave horrida originates from central Mexico and grows naturally on rocky volcanic slopes and lava fields at altitudes of up to 2,400 metres. The plant is known as 'Mexcalmetl' and its leaves can reportedly be boiled and eaten or baked to make an alcoholic drink called Mexcalli.The specific name "horrida" comes from the Latin and refers to the large teeth on the leaf margins, which are described as "formidably armed".

Offered is plant (1 of 1) from my agave collection; grown from a small plant in my garden (450m above sea level), very beautiful strong plant - with a diameter of about 35-40cm, not over-fertilised, therefore robust & healthy (100% organic quality before quantity!), slow-growing; potted in self-mixed permeable organic substrate; repotting only desired in 2-3 years; easy to care for, for a (very) sunny location, e.g. on a roof terrace; please avoid waterlogging; hardy, in a dry place with very light watering at most once a month; easy to care for, please avoid waterlogging.
