Brachychiton trees are a remarkable genus of drought-resistant trees and shrubs native to Australia and New Guinea. Recognized for their distinctive bottle-shaped trunks, vibrant bell-shaped flowers, and adaptability, they are highly valued by collectors, xeriscaping enthusiasts, and bonsai growers.  

Origin & Natural Habitat  
Brachychiton species naturally thrive in semi-arid to tropical regions, where they have developed the ability to store water in their trunks to survive long dry periods. Some of the most sought-after species include Brachychiton bidwillii (Little Kurrajong) and Brachychiton rupestris (Queensland Bottle Tree), both known for their striking ornamental value and resilience.  

Growth & Appearance  
Brachychiton trees feature a diverse range of leaf shapes, from large, glossy, lobed forms to more slender and delicate foliage. The flowers, appearing seasonally, range in color from deep red and pink to pale yellow, forming clusters that attract pollinators. Over time, many species develop a swollen, bottle-like base, an adaptation for water storage that also adds to their sculptural aesthetic.  

Care & Cultivation  
These plants require full sun for optimal growth and should be placed outdoors whenever possible during warm months. Watering should be kept moderate in summer and minimal in winter, as overwatering is the most common issue. They are not frost-hardy and should be kept at temperatures between 10–15°C during winter dormancy. Fertilization is rarely needed but can be applied in early spring with a slow-release, balanced formula. Repotting is only necessary every one to two years, as these trees prefer slightly root-bound conditions.
