Astrophytum Myriostigma
Astrophytum Myriostigma is a fascinating cactus species loved for its unique, symmetrical shape and velvety appearance. Commonly known as the bishop's cap cactus, this plant is native to the arid highlands of north-eastern and central Mexico, where it thrives in rocky terrain and open deserts.
In contrast to the *Nudum* variety, the green surface of Astrophytum Myriostigma is covered with tiny white scales that give it a speckled, star-shaped appearance. This natural coating protects the plant from intense sunlight and gives it a very special charm. Its structure is characterised by 3-7 ribs (usually 5) and its geometric shape makes it a favourite among cactus lovers and collectors.
During the growing season, this slow-growing cactus produces elegant, funnel-shaped yellow flowers, often with an orange or red centre, which bloom at the top of the plant. These bright flowers contrast beautifully with the muted tones of the cactus and make for a striking sight.
Astrophytum Myriostigma thrives in a sunny, well-ventilated location with well-drained cactus soil. It is easy to care for and only needs minimal watering to avoid waterlogging and root problems. Although it is not frost-hardy, it is ideal for indoor and outdoor use as long as it is protected from frost. Due to its slow growth, repotting is only required every 2-3 years, making it a low-maintenance addition to any collection.
