Adenia olaboensis is a large climber with a conical trunk that can be up to 2 metres thick at the base. It belongs to the approximately 100 species of the genus Adenia, which is widely distributed in Africa and Madagascar, with about 18 species endemic to Madagascar. Adenia olaboensis is an extremely decorative species that is worth cultivating. The surface of the stem somewhat resembles the skin of a crocodile, and the species is called "olaboay" by the Sakalava tribe, which means "crocodile".
