Homalomena rubescens – Tropical Green Foliage with Wine-Red Stems
A lush tropical foliage plant with pure green leaves and distinctive wine-red stems. At first glance, Homalomena rubescens may resemble a Philodendron, but it belongs to a different botanical genus. With time, it develops into a vigorous, impressive houseplant for bright, semi-shaded interiors.
At TOMs FLOWer CLUB in Adliswil, Switzerland, this offering comes from my own plant collection. You receive a plant from the displayed plant family, approximately 60 × 60 cm in size.
Botanical Profile
- Botanical name: Homalomena rubescens
- Plant family: Araceae (aroid family)
- Foliage: Rich, pure green leaves with wine-red stems
- Growth: Vigorous, tropical, and potentially up to around 1 m tall under suitable conditions
- Natural distribution: Tropical Asia; the genus Homalomena is also represented in South America
Cultivation & Care
- Location: Semi-shade to bright indirect light; avoid direct sunlight
- Window placement: A suitable window location works well, including above a radiator, provided the plant does not dry out excessively
- Summer: From May onwards, avoid a south-facing window because the sunlight can become too intense
- Watering: Keep the substrate lightly and evenly moist, but never waterlogged
- Humidity: Showering the leaves gently with lukewarm water about once a month can help keep them clean
- Substrate: Planted in my own well-drained, self-mixed organic substrate
- Repotting: No repotting should be necessary for approximately one year under normal growing conditions
A Note from TOMs FLOWer CLUB
This is one of my own mother plants, cultivated with attention to plant health and long-term growth. I prioritise quality over quantity and use a permeable, self-mixed organic substrate rather than relying on excessive fertiliser. No leaf-glossing agents are used.
Homalomena rubescens is an excellent choice for plant enthusiasts who appreciate lush tropical foliage, distinctive red stems, and a plant that becomes more impressive as it matures.
