Myrtus Communis Tarentensis
Myrtus Communis var. Tarentensis is a subspecies of the plant species Myrtus communis, which belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The plant is also known as "Taranto myrtle" and is native to Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
Compared to the species Myrtus communis, the variety tarentensis differs in its larger leaves and flowers as well as its more robust growth habit. The plant can reach a height of up to 3 metres and has a bushy habit with many branches.
The leaves of Myrtus communis var. tarentensis are leathery and glossy, elliptical to oval shaped. The flowers are white or light pink and about 2 cm in diameter. They appear in summer and are surrounded by numerous stamens.
The Taranto myrtle is also valued for its aromatic fragrance and culinary uses. The leaves and fruits are sometimes used as a spice or as an ingredient in liqueurs, desserts or tea. In traditional medicine, the plant is also valued for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
