Aloe haworthioides - Madagascan Dwarf Aloe

A small aloe with a surprisingly distinctive character. Aloe haworthioides originates from Madagascar and is appreciated by succulent collectors for its compact rosettes and narrow green leaves edged and covered with fine, pale, hair-like teeth. This unusual texture gives the plant a soft, almost bristly appearance and makes it stand out from more familiar aloe species.

Unlike large, architectural aloes, Aloe haworthioides remains relatively compact and can gradually develop into a clump of rosettes. Under suitable conditions, it may also produce slender flower stalks carrying tubular orange to reddish-orange flowers.

At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, I focus on individually cultivated plants, natural development and quality before quantity. My plants are grown organically, without routine chemical sprays, artificial leaf-glossing agents or growth hormones. The emphasis is on healthy plants and their natural character rather than artificially accelerated growth.

Growing conditions

Aloe haworthioides appreciates a bright position with good light. Some direct sunlight is beneficial after gradual acclimatisation. Use a very permeable, well-draining succulent substrate and allow it to dry thoroughly between waterings. Avoid leaving the roots in permanently wet soil, particularly in cool weather.

During the warmer months, the plant can enjoy a sheltered outdoor position in Switzerland. Bring it indoors before temperatures become too low, as this Madagascan succulent is not frost-hardy. In winter, provide as much light as possible and reduce watering according to temperature and growth.

Aloe haworthioides is an appealing choice for collectors of compact aloes, miniature succulents and plants with unusual foliage. Its distinctive pale leaf teeth provide much of its character, even when the plant is not in flower.
