Kumara plicatilis (Aloe plicatilis) – Fan Aloe | Stem-Forming South African Collector Plant
A distinctive, stem-forming succulent from South Africa, best known for its beautifully arranged, fan-shaped rows of flattened leaves. Commonly known as Fan Aloe, Aloe plicatilis develops a woody stem and, with age, can become a wonderfully architectural, branching specimen.
This plant has already developed a beautiful stem base and has been carefully cultivated at TOMs FLOWer CLUB over several years. It has been grown slowly and naturally, without being pushed with excessive fertiliser – because at TOMs FLOWer CLUB, 100% organic quality comes before quantity. The result is a healthy, robust and well-established plant with a natural, mature character.
The plant is already potted in TOM's own self-mixed, highly permeable organic substrate. Repotting is therefore not necessary for the next 2–3 years unless you specifically wish to do so.
Kumara plicatilis is relatively easy to care for when given the right conditions: a very bright to sunny position, excellent drainage and careful watering. After its winter resting period, it can resume active growth and flower, producing attractive yellowish to orange-red flower spikes. At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, the plants are given a cooler winter rest at around 10–15 °C with reduced watering.
This is not a hardy plant and must be protected from frost and freezing temperatures. During the warmer months, a sunny outdoor position can be particularly beneficial, provided temperatures remain suitable.
With its unusual fan-shaped foliage, developing trunk and architectural form, Aloe plicatilis makes a genuine statement plant – an eye-catching addition to a succulent or collector's plant collection that becomes increasingly impressive with age.
Enjoy your new Aloe plicatilis as it continues to develop its characteristic fan-shaped growth and woody stem over the years.
