Operculicarya Decaryi – Madagascar Elephant Tree | A Living Caudex Masterpiece for Collectors
What is Operculicarya decaryi?
Operculicarya decaryi, often referred to as the Madagascar Elephant Tree, is one of the most fascinating caudiciform plants available to collectors. Native to the dry forests of south-western Madagascar, this remarkable member of the Anacardiaceae family develops a thickened trunk and sculptural branching structure that become increasingly impressive with age.
In its natural habitat, Operculicarya decaryi can grow into a small tree reaching up to 10 metres in height with a trunk diameter approaching one metre. In cultivation, however, it is especially valued for its ability to develop a beautifully textured trunk, intricate branching, and a bonsai-like appearance while remaining manageable in a container.
The plant offered by TOMs FLOWer CLUB originates from our own seed-grown propagation and has been cultivated slowly and naturally. It is a genuine collector's plant for enthusiasts who appreciate unusual growth forms, long-term cultivation, and botanical rarity.

Collector Note
Among serious collectors of caudiciform plants, Operculicarya decaryi occupies a very special place.
Unlike many succulent species that are appreciated primarily for their leaves or flowers, this species becomes more beautiful through the gradual development of its trunk and branching structure. With age, the bark develops texture, the caudex gains character, and the entire plant begins to resemble an ancient miniature tree shaped by decades of natural forces.
Many collectors consider Operculicarya decaryi one of the finest species for natural bonsai-style cultivation. Unlike artificially shaped bonsai, the species develops much of its charm entirely on its own.
Patience is rewarded generously with this plant.
Care
Light
A very bright location is essential.
Full sun or a sunny windowsill is ideal throughout the growing season.
Watering
Water moderately during active growth.
Allow the substrate to dry between waterings.
Avoid waterlogging at all times.
Humidity
Normal indoor humidity is entirely sufficient.
Temperature
Warm growing conditions from spring through autumn.
During winter dormancy, temperatures between 10–15°C are ideal.
Substrate
The plant is established in a carefully prepared self-mixed organic substrate with excellent drainage.
Repotting is generally only desirable after 1–2 years.
Maintenance
Very little maintenance required.
Leaf drop before winter is entirely natural and should not cause concern.
Additional Cultivation Tips
During winter dormancy, reduce watering drastically or stop watering completely, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
The temporary leafless period is a normal adaptation to seasonal drought and part of the species' natural growth cycle.
With warmth, sunlight and increasing day length in spring, new foliage emerges reliably.
Cultivated with Care at TOMs FLOWer CLUB
At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, plants are cultivated according to a simple principle: quality before quantity.
This Operculicarya decaryi was grown from our own propagation and has never been pushed with excessive fertiliser. Instead, it has been cultivated slowly, allowing the trunk, root system and overall structure to develop naturally.
The plant is established in a self-mixed permeable organic substrate designed specifically for long-term health and stable growth.
We believe exceptional collector plants are measured not by how quickly they are produced, but by how well they thrive over many years.
