HOSTA COLLECTION

Elegant Shade Perennials for Natural Garden Design

Discover the beauty of our carefully selected Hosta collection – timeless foliage perennials valued for their sculptural leaves, rich textures and calm, architectural presence in the garden. They are ideal plants for shaded areas, woodland borders and modern naturalistic planting schemes.

Hostas perform best in light shade to full shade, where their foliage develops most naturally. Filtered sunlight can be especially beneficial for variegated varieties, as it enhances their colour contrast. Green and blue-leaved hostas are generally the most shade-tolerant, while yellow cultivars can handle a bit more sun. The most important rule is to avoid strong direct afternoon sun, particularly in hot conditions, as this can easily damage the leaves. Variegated forms with high white markings are especially sensitive and may burn quickly. Blue-toned hostas can also lose their intensity and shift towards greenish tones if exposed to too much sun.

For best results, hostas should be planted in moist, humus-rich and well-structured soil. Consistent moisture is important, especially during establishment. After planting, water thoroughly and continue regular watering throughout the first one to two growing seasons to help the plants establish strong root systems.

Although some varieties with thicker leaves tolerate slightly drier conditions better, hostas in general should never be left in long periods of dry soil. Once established, they become reliable, long-lived perennials that reward patience with impressive growth and structure.

Hostas are slow to mature and may take between 2 to 5 years to reach their full size, depending on the variety. Larger cultivars require even more space and time, so generous spacing in perennial beds is recommended from the start.

In the garden, hostas are generally very robust and largely disease-resistant. The main challenges come from slugs, snails and in some regions deer, which can damage the foliage if not managed.

From TOMs FLOWer CLUB, our hostas are selected for strong garden performance, healthy root development and natural, organically influenced cultivation. They are perfect for shaded borders, woodland-style gardens, modern planting designs and also container arrangements in shaded terraces.
