Begonia 'Lucerna' is the old classic, stem-forming "Angel Wing Begonia". It was bred in 1892 by Wettstein from Lucerne, Switzerland. Originally it was called 'Corallina de Lucerna'. This begonia is very vigorous and flowers frequently. The leaves are olive green with small silver spots on the top and red on the underside. The flowers are pinkish-red to pink, depending on the incidence of light. In stronger light the flowers are darker. The flowers appear in large clusters hanging from the stems. This early variety is very easy to grow and propagate. It is a popular plant because it is easy to cultivate. It can grow up to 2m high.

One of my mother plants from my own plant collection; grown organically slowly in the winter garden without fertiliser; not over-fertilised therefore top healthy and robust (100% organic quality before quantity!), easy to care for, very suitable for a semi-shady (but still bright) location (no direct sun! ), potted in self-mixed permeable organic substrate; repotting not desired until spring 2024; showering off the leaves once every fortnight is very good for the plant; enjoy your new Begonia Lucerna!
