Eucalyptus polyanthemos, commonly known as the ‘silver dollar tree’ or ‘red box’, is a species of eucalyptus native to south-east Australia.

Eucalyptus polyanthemos is a medium-sized tree that can reach a height of 10-25 metres in its natural habitat. It has a spreading crown with a characteristic round or oval shape. The young leaves are round and silvery-blue, which gave the tree the name ‘silver dollar tree’. The mature leaves are lanceolate and grey-green. The tree forms clusters of small, white to cream-coloured flowers, which normally bloom from late winter to early summer.

Eucalyptus polyanthemos is very drought tolerant and can tolerate light frost (down to -10C with frost protection recommended). The plant prefers full sun, but can also grow in partial shade. Moderate watering is required, especially during the growth phase. Older trees are more drought-resistant. Pruning can help to maintain the shape and promote healthy growth. The tree can be beautifully moulded into a garden bonsai tree or cultivated in a pot on a balcony or sunny terrace.
