Aloe striata - The Elegant Coral Aloe from South Africa
Origin
Aloe striata, also known as the Coral Aloe, is a graceful, rosette-forming succulent native to the arid and semi-arid regions of South Africa’s Cape Provinces. In its natural habitat, it grows in rocky slopes and dry grasslands, thriving in full sun and well-drained soils. Its soft, spineless leaves and stunning flower display make it a true gem among aloes.
Characteristics
Aloe striata is instantly recognizable by its smooth, broad, blue-green leaves with distinctive coral to pinkish leaf margins, especially when exposed to sunlight. Unlike many other aloes, it has no spines, making it not only striking but also pleasant to handle. Mature plants send up tall, branching stalks with vibrant coral-red to orange flowers in late winter or spring – a favourite for pollinators like bees and sunbirds. The plant forms a neat rosette, growing up to 45 cm high and wide, making it perfect for pots, borders, or rock gardens.
Care
Aloe striata is drought-tolerant, sun-loving, and very low-maintenance. It prefers a bright, well-drained location and is ideal for sunny windowsills, balconies, and patios. From April to October, it can thrive outdoors. It is not frost-hardy, so protect it from freezing temperatures in winter. Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. An annual dose of slow-release organic fertiliser is sufficient for healthy growth.
From Our Collection
This Aloe striata comes from our own plant collection, carefully propagated and organically grown without overfertilisation or chemical sprays. It was grown outdoors with winter rest, not rushed in greenhouse culture. Potted in our self-mixed, permeable cactus substrate, it’s already well-established. Repotting is only recommended every 1–2 years.
