Saintpaulia ionantha, the wild form is native to Africa, is a tender, herbaceous, flowering perennial for indoor use that grows up to 15 cm tall and up to 30 cm wide. It can be multi-stemmed, but usually grows as a single-crowned plant. A cultivated form with dwarf growth and small flowers is available. The plant thrives best in a bright, warm and moist location. Make sure that the leaves do not come into contact with water, as this will lead to brown spots. Remove dead flowers and leaves as soon as you see them to promote a healthier plant. Check the soil and the plant regularly to ensure there is no build-up of dead leaves. This encourages rotting. The plant is not hardy, relatively easy to care for, bright (but not directly sunny) location. Saintpaulia is very easy to propagate from leaf cuttings - this usually gives you 3-10 new young plants; enjoy your beautifully delicate Saintpaulia ionantha (and no matter which flower colour you choose; they're all just magical, aren't they?!
