Aspidistra Elatior Asahi
Aspidistra elatior is native to Taiwan and the islands of southern Japan, where it grows as an understory plant. The name of the genus is derived from the Greek word 'aspidion', meaning 'shield', in reference to the typical broad lanceolate leaves of the species, which are shield-shaped.
The cultivar name 'ASAHI' translates from Japanese as 'rising sun' or 'morning sun', a fitting name for this plant with its attractive white central stripe, which has long been used for flower arrangements in Japan. The unique evergreen leaves are characterised by the upper third of the leaves developing a dramatic white colour as the season progresses.
The plant offered is from my own propagation (division of the 100% organically grown mother plant from my own Aspidistra collection), not over-fertilised therefore top healthy and robust (organic quality before quantity! ), planted in self-mixed permeable organic substrate (repotting desired in one year), it is noted that the leaves will not develop their unique colouration if kept crowded in a too small container, and that older potted specimens should be divided and repotted for this reason too; leaf length of the adult plant up to 50-70cm, until the first frost days the plant stands in the garden therefore it is well hardened off, easy to care for, very suitable for a half-shady to shady location (no direct sun!). ); I always keep the Aspidistras outside between 03.-11.; some of the plants are conditionally hardy down to -5; cat-friendly; enjoy your new Aspidistra Elatior Asahi!
