Boswellia neglecta

Black Frankincense Tree - An African Dryland Tree with Sculptural Character

Boswellia neglecta is a distinctive tree from the drylands of East Africa, appreciated by specialist plant collectors for its drought-adapted growth, woody structure and remarkable botanical character. Native to regions including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda, this member of the frankincense family grows naturally in dry shrubland and open woodland.

Its branching growth and characteristic bark give it an individual silhouette, while its adaptation to seasonal rainfall makes it particularly interesting for collectors of caudiciform and drought-adapted plants. Under suitable conditions, the plant can develop into a small tree, making it a rewarding long-term subject for observation and cultivation.

Botanical Profile

  • Botanical name: Boswellia neglecta
  • Common name: Black Frankincense Tree
  • Family: Burseraceae
  • Natural distribution: East Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda
  • Growth habit: Woody shrub or small tree
  • Natural habitat: Dry shrubland and woodland
  • Botanical interest: Drought adaptation, distinctive branching and frankincense-producing resin

Cultivation & Care

  • Light: Provide the brightest position available, ideally with plenty of direct sunshine. Acclimatise the plant gradually when moving it into stronger sunlight.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the substrate to dry well before watering again. Avoid permanently moist soil.
  • Substrate: Use a very permeable, well-aerated mineral-rich mix suitable for drought-adapted plants.
  • Drainage: Essential. Waterlogging and prolonged cold combined with wet substrate can cause serious problems.
  • Temperature: A warmth-loving species that must be protected from frost. Keep it in a warm, bright environment during the colder months.
  • Seasonal growth: Growth and leaf development respond to water availability. Adjust watering to the plant's actual growth, temperature and light conditions rather than following a fixed calendar.
  • Winter care: In cooler or darker conditions, reduce watering considerably. Never leave the root zone persistently wet.

A Note from TOMs FLOWer CLUB

At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, I appreciate plants that offer more than a decorative appearance. Boswellia neglecta is a fascinating botanical subject: a tree adapted to demanding environments, with a natural structure that can become increasingly individual as it matures.

The species also has a genuine cultural and practical connection to frankincense. Its resin is used locally as incense, making this plant part of a long tradition of human interaction with the dryland trees of East Africa.

Please note that this is a specialist plant for a very bright, warm growing position and careful watering. It is best suited to collectors who can provide excellent drainage and protect it from cold and excessive moisture.
