Cissus Quadrangularis
Cissus Quadrangularis
Four-Angled Succulent Climber with Sculptural, Fleshy Stems
The Cissus quadrangularis is a distinctive succulent climber from the grape family (Vitaceae), valued for its unusual four-angled, fleshy stems and architectural growth habit. Unlike conventional climbing plants, its thick green stems are almost succulent in character, often developing reddish edges and a striking jointed structure. Small leaves may appear along the younger growth, while mature stems can become more prominent as the plant develops. This unusual combination makes Cissus quadrangularis an appealing addition to collections of botanical rarities and succulent plants.
Botanical Profile
Native to tropical and seasonally dry regions of Africa, Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent, Cissus quadrangularis is a perennial climbing plant that attaches itself with tendrils. Its botanical name refers to the characteristic four-sided shape of its stems.
Also known as the climbing cactus, veld grape or adamant creeper, this species is not a true cactus. Its fleshy stems are adapted to periods of limited water availability, giving the plant a distinctive appearance among climbing species. Under suitable conditions, it can produce small flowers followed by rounded berries.
Cultivation & Care
-
Light: Bright light to full sun. Introduce the plant gradually to stronger sunlight after a period indoors.
-
Water: Water during active growth, allowing the substrate to dry partly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler, slower-growing periods.
-
Soil: Use a loose, gritty, well-drained substrate that allows excess water to escape freely.
-
Temperature: Requires frost-free conditions. Protect from cold temperatures, particularly when grown in a container.
-
Growth Habit: A climbing succulent with jointed stems and tendrils. Provide a support if you want to encourage vertical growth, or allow the stems to develop freely.
-
Winter Care: In cooler conditions, growth may slow considerably. Keep the plant drier when growth is reduced and avoid cold, wet substrate.
A Note from TOMs FLOWer CLUB
At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, we appreciate plants for their botanical individuality, unusual structure and natural character. Our cultivation philosophy places quality before quantity, with attention to balanced growth and suitable growing conditions rather than excessive fertilisation or artificially accelerated development.
Cissus quadrangularis is an intriguing choice for collectors who value sculptural succulent stems and plants that differ from conventional foliage houseplants. Its distinctive form makes it equally interesting as a standalone specimen or as part of a diverse succulent collection.
