Dicksonia Antarctica - Tasmanian Tree Fern | A Living Relic from the Age of Dinosaurs
Dicksonia antarctica is one of the world's most fascinating prehistoric plants. Commonly known as the Tasmanian Tree Fern, this remarkable species has existed in essentially its current form for millions of years and represents a living connection to Earth's ancient forests. Native to Australia and Tasmania, it develops a slowly elongating trunk crowned by elegant arching fronds, creating an unmistakable tropical and primeval appearance.
In its natural habitat, Dicksonia antarctica can develop impressive trunks reaching up to 10 metres in height over many decades. Unlike modern trees, the trunk consists of a dense fibrous stem that continuously supports the production of magnificent fern fronds. Its architectural beauty, longevity, and prehistoric character have made it one of the most admired tree ferns among collectors and botanical garden enthusiasts worldwide.
The specimen offered by TOMs FLOWer CLUB originates from our own botanical collection and is presented as a beautiful double-stemmed plant. Organically cultivated from a young plant and grown naturally without intensive greenhouse production methods, it represents the quality and authenticity that serious plant collectors appreciate.

Collector Note
Among all tree ferns in cultivation, Dicksonia antarctica remains one of the most desirable species. Collectors value its exceptional longevity, graceful appearance, and connection to Earth's prehistoric past.
Unlike many tropical ferns that require constantly warm conditions, Dicksonia antarctica is remarkably adaptable when provided with adequate moisture and protection from severe frost. Its slow development means that mature trunk-forming specimens represent many years of careful cultivation.
For plant enthusiasts who appreciate unusual botanical treasures, few plants create the same atmosphere as a well-grown tree fern. The species immediately evokes ancient forests and brings a truly exotic character to any collection.
Care
Light:
Partial shade to full shade is ideal. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense midday sun, particularly during hot summer periods.
Watering:
Consistently moist conditions are essential. The root zone should never dry out completely. During active growth, regular watering is required.
Humidity:
High humidity is highly beneficial. Regular misting or showering of the fronds, preferably with rainwater, promotes healthy growth.
Temperature:
Best grown in cool to moderate temperatures. Protect container-grown plants from severe frost.
Substrate:
A moisture-retentive yet well-drained organic substrate supports healthy root development and long-term growth.
Maintenance:
Remove old fronds when necessary. Keep the trunk and crown moist during active growth periods.
Additional cultivation tips:
From spring until late autumn, Dicksonia antarctica greatly benefits from spending time outdoors in a sheltered, shaded location. Natural rainfall and fresh air often encourage vigorous growth and lush foliage development.
Cultivated with Care at TOMs FLOWer CLUB
This Dicksonia antarctica originates from our own botanical collection and has been cultivated according to the TOMs FLOWer CLUB philosophy of 100% organic quality before quantity.
The plant has been grown slowly and naturally from a young specimen without intensive greenhouse forcing or excessive fertilisation. By avoiding over-fertilisation, the plant develops stronger roots, healthier growth, and greater long-term resilience.
It is cultivated in our self-mixed permeable organic substrate, specifically designed to provide the ideal balance between moisture retention, aeration, and drainage. No artificial leaf gloss products or unnecessary chemical treatments are used.
Our goal is not rapid production but the cultivation of healthy, robust plants capable of thriving for many years.
