Euphorbia regis-jubae

Canary Islands Tree Spurge – A Sculptural Subtropical Shrub

Euphorbia regis-jubae is a distinctive, woody-growing spurge native to the eastern Canary Islands, western Morocco and north-western Western Sahara. Its upright, branching growth and clusters of narrow, elongated leaves at the ends of its stems give it a characteristic architectural appearance. With time and suitable growing conditions, it can develop into an impressive shrub with a small-tree character.

Unlike the familiar compact succulent euphorbias, this species has a more shrub-like growth habit. It is an interesting choice for collectors who appreciate subtropical plants with strong structure, unusual botanical character and the potential to develop an individual silhouette.

  • Family: Euphorbiaceae
  • Common name: Canary Islands tree spurge; tabaiba morisca

Cultivation & Care

  • Light: Provide a very bright position with plenty of light. Introduce plants gradually to stronger direct sunshine.
  • Watering: Use a freely draining substrate and allow it to dry substantially between waterings. Avoid persistently wet soil.
  • Substrate: A permeable, well-aerated mix suited to succulents and other drought-adapted plants.
  • Temperature: A subtropical species best grown in warmth. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, particularly when grown in a pot.
  • Seasonal growth: Adjust watering to temperature, available light and active growth rather than following a fixed schedule.
  • Outdoor cultivation: A sunny, sheltered outdoor position can be beneficial during warm weather; bring the plant into suitable protection before cold conditions arrive.

A Note from TOMs FLOWer CLUB

At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, I appreciate plants that offer something beyond conventional houseplant form. Euphorbia regis-jubae is an excellent example: a distinctive, woody spurge with a natural architectural character that can become increasingly impressive as it develops.

As with all euphorbias, take care when handling the plant. Its milky sap can irritate the skin and seriously injure the eyes. Keep it away from children and pets, and avoid contact with the sap.

TOMs FLOWer CLUB – Quality before quantity. Plants with soul.

You get the plant of the displayed size, roudn 40-60cm incl. pot, nicely branched.
