Ficus Microcarpa Ginseng - Bonsai Tree
Ficus microcarpa ‘Ginseng’ – Ginseng Ficus Bonsai
Ficus microcarpa ‘Ginseng’, commonly known as Ginseng Ficus, Ginseng Fig or Ficus Ginseng Bonsai, is a distinctive evergreen bonsai with a fascinating sculptural appearance. Its characteristic thickened, exposed root and trunk base gives the plant its recognisable “ginseng” appearance, while the compact crown carries glossy green leaves.
Unlike many traditional bonsai trees, Ficus microcarpa ‘Ginseng’ is a tropical and subtropical Ficus and therefore particularly well suited to cultivation as an indoor bonsai in our climate. It can become a long-lived houseplant when provided with the right conditions.
The thick, sculptural root base is one of the main attractions of this bonsai. New shoots and branches can be pruned to maintain a compact crown and to develop the characteristic bonsai shape over time. Ficus microcarpa is naturally vigorous, which makes it forgiving and suitable for both beginners and more experienced bonsai enthusiasts.
Location & care
• very bright location with plenty of natural light
• a bright windowsill is ideal
• protect from strong, prolonged midday summer sun when necessary
• during the warm months, it can enjoy a sheltered outdoor location
• water thoroughly when the upper layer of the substrate has started to dry
• avoid permanent wetness and standing water
• good drainage is essential
• maintain moderate to higher humidity where possible
• regular pruning helps maintain the compact bonsai shape
• feed moderately during the active growing season
• in winter, keep warm and bright; ideally not below approximately 15°C
• avoid cold draughts and sudden changes in location
Ficus microcarpa can naturally produce small figs under suitable conditions. When branches or roots are cut, the plant releases a white milky latex sap, which is a natural characteristic of Ficus species.
With its unusual swollen root base, evergreen foliage and established bonsai form, Ficus microcarpa ‘Ginseng’ brings a distinctly tropical and sculptural character into the home. It is an attractive choice for anyone looking for a low-maintenance indoor bonsai with a strong visual presence.
