Hoya Australis 'Lisa' - Wax Flower | Variegated Foliage and Fragrant Blooms

Hoya australis 'Lisa' is one of the most beautiful and rewarding variegated Hoyas in cultivation. A selected form of the Australian wax plant, this charming climbing species is admired for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves decorated with cream, yellow, lime-green, and pink variegation. Each leaf is unique, giving the plant a constantly changing appearance throughout the year.

Native to Australia and belonging to the Apocynaceae family, Hoya australis naturally grows as a climbing epiphyte in warm tropical and subtropical environments. Over time, Hoya australis 'Lisa' develops elegant trailing or climbing vines that can be trained onto supports or allowed to cascade gracefully from hanging baskets.

What truly elevates this cultivar beyond its already exceptional foliage are its flowers. Mature plants produce clusters of star-shaped waxy blooms with a delightful sweet fragrance. Combined with its relatively easy cultivation and striking variegation, Hoya australis 'Lisa' has become a favourite among both seasoned Hoya collectors and indoor plant enthusiasts.

Collector Note

Among the many variegated Hoyas available today, Hoya australis 'Lisa' remains one of the most desirable and reliable cultivars. Collectors appreciate the combination of vigorous growth, attractive variegation, and fragrant flowering performance.

Unlike some highly variegated Hoyas that can be slow or demanding, Hoya australis 'Lisa' generally grows steadily when provided with suitable conditions. New growth often emerges with beautiful pink and cream tones before gradually maturing into the characteristic multicoloured foliage.

For many Hoya enthusiasts, this cultivar represents the perfect balance between ornamental beauty and ease of cultivation. It is equally attractive as a standalone specimen or as part of a diverse Hoya collection.

Care

Light:
Bright indirect light is ideal. A bright location encourages compact growth and strong variegation. Avoid intense direct midday sun.

Watering:
Allow the upper layer of the substrate to dry before watering again. Avoid prolonged drought as well as waterlogging.

Humidity:
Moderate to high humidity promotes optimal growth and flowering, although the plant adapts well to average indoor conditions.

Temperature:
Best grown between 18–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C.

Substrate:
A highly permeable and airy substrate is essential. Excellent drainage around the roots supports healthy long-term growth.

Maintenance:
Occasional pruning encourages branching and a fuller appearance. Flower spurs should not be removed, as future blooms often emerge from the same locations.

Additional cultivation tips:
During the growing season, Hoya australis 'Lisa' benefits greatly from spending time outdoors in a protected, shaded location. Fresh air, natural humidity, and gentle temperature fluctuations often encourage vigorous growth.

Cultivated with Care at TOMs FLOWer CLUB

Every Hoya australis 'Lisa' offered by TOMs FLOWer CLUB originates from our own Hoya collection and has been propagated from established mother plants.

Our philosophy is simple: quality before quantity.

Plants are cultivated slowly and naturally without intensive mass-production methods. They are not over-fertilised, allowing them to develop strong root systems, healthy foliage, and long-term resilience. We do not use leaf shine products, glazing agents, or unnecessary chemical sprays.

Each plant is grown in a carefully prepared self-mixed permeable organic substrate specifically designed for epiphytic plants. This provides the ideal balance between aeration, drainage, and moisture retention.

From April until October, many of our Hoyas enjoy a protected outdoor location in the shade, contributing to robust growth and natural development.
