Moringa Drouhardii | Bottle Tree from Madagascar | Grown from Seed | Collector's Plant

A rare and fascinating Moringa from Madagascar

Moringa drouhardii is one of the most distinctive species in the genus Moringa and a fascinating plant for collectors of unusual trees, pachycaul plants and botanical rarities.

The plant offered here was grown from seed and originates from Madagascar. It currently measures approximately 40-60 cm in total height, including the pot.

The characteristic feature of Moringa drouhardii is its swollen, bottle-shaped trunk. As the plant matures, the trunk becomes increasingly enlarged and develops into a natural water reservoir - an adaptation to the pronounced dry periods of its native habitat in southwestern Madagascar.

This is therefore not a plant that wants to remain constantly wet.

With Moringa drouhardii, excellent drainage and periods of dryness are much more important than permanently moist soil.

A plant for collectors

Moringa drouhardii is very different from the commonly cultivated Moringa oleifera.

Instead of the familiar slender Moringa, it develops into a remarkable bottle tree with a swollen trunk and delicate, finely divided foliage.

The species can eventually become a substantial tree in suitable conditions, making a young specimen particularly interesting to watch as its characteristic trunk develops over time.

It can also be cultivated as a bonsai or bonsai-style container specimen, although I prefer allowing young plants to establish and develop their natural trunk and branching structure first.

From seed & cultivated at TOMs FLOWer CLUB

The offered plant has been grown from seed.

I do not massively fertilise my plants to force rapid growth. Instead, I allow them to develop at their natural pace and concentrate on strong, healthy plants with a properly developing root system.

This Moringa has therefore been cultivated with moderate fertilisation and plenty of attention to good drainage.

It is currently growing in a self-mixed, permeable organic substrate, specially chosen to allow excess water to drain away efficiently and to maintain good aeration around the roots.

For me:

100% organic quality before quantity!

The result is a healthy and robust young Moringa drouhardii, ready to continue developing its characteristic bottle-tree form.

The right location

Light

Moringa drouhardii needs a lot of light.

Give it the sunniest location you have in your home. A bright window with several hours of direct sunlight is ideal.

During summer, I strongly recommend giving the plant an outdoor stay on a sunny balcony or terrace, provided temperatures are sufficiently warm and there is no danger of frost.

The combination of strong sunlight, warmth and fresh air is particularly beneficial during the growing season.

When moving the plant outdoors, acclimatise it gradually to strong direct sunlight.

Watering

The swollen trunk is an important clue to how this plant should be treated.

Moringa drouhardii is naturally adapted to periods of dryness and stores water in its enlarged trunk.

During the summer growing season:

Water thoroughly, but allow the substrate to dry between waterings.

Do not keep the soil permanently moist. During warm periods of active growth, the plant can be watered more regularly, particularly when growing outdoors.

During winter:

Water very little.

When temperatures and light levels are lower, growth slows considerably and the plant should be kept much drier.

The basic rule is simple:

Rather too dry than too wet.

The combination of cool temperatures and wet soil should be avoided.

Winter

Moringa drouhardii is not hardy and must be protected from frost.

During winter, I recommend placing it in a bright location, ideally at approximately 10–15°C.

At these cooler temperatures, watering should be reduced significantly.

If the plant is kept warmer and receives sufficient light, it may continue growing during winter. In that case, watering should be adjusted according to actual growth.

Substrate & repotting

Good drainage is particularly important for this species.

The plant offered here is already growing in a self-mixed, permeable organic substrate.

I would not recommend repotting immediately after purchase.

The plant can remain in its current substrate for the time being. I would consider repotting after approximately 1-2 years, assuming the plant remains healthy and the substrate continues to provide good drainage.

There is no advantage in disturbing a healthy young Moringa unnecessarily.

What You Receive

You will receive the Moringa drouhardii plant in the displayed size, currently approximately 40–60 cm high including the pot.

The plant has been grown from seed, is well established, healthy and robust, and is already planted in a permeable, self-mixed organic substrate.

Please note that, as with all naturally grown plants, the exact shape, branching and development of the trunk will continue to change as the plant matures.

The characteristic bottle-shaped trunk becomes increasingly pronounced with age, so the plant offered here represents the beginning of the development of a future bottle-tree specimen.

A final thought

Moringa drouhardii is not an ordinary green houseplant.

It is a fascinating bottle tree from Madagascar, with a swollen water-storing trunk, delicate foliage and the potential to develop into a truly impressive collector's specimen.

Give it lots of light, warmth during the growing season, a sunny summer outdoors, excellent drainage and a much drier winter.

Then let it develop at its own pace.

Enjoy your new Moringa drouhardii!
