Phalaenopsis Liu's Triprince 'Pink' – a small-flowered, fragrant Phalaenopsis hybrid
A particularly interesting Phalaenopsis hybrid for orchid lovers and collectors: Phalaenopsis Liu's Triprince 'Pink' combines small, elegant pink flowers with a pleasant fragrance and an interesting species-influenced background.
Phalaenopsis Liu's Triprince is a registered hybrid of Phalaenopsis Eduardo Quisumbing × Phalaenopsis lobbii. Its genetic background includes Phalaenopsis lobbii, Phalaenopsis amabilis and Phalaenopsis pulcherrima, giving this hybrid a very different character from the large-flowered Phalaenopsis hybrids commonly found in supermarkets and garden centres.
The flowers are relatively small, around 3 cm, but this is precisely part of their charm. The Pink form produces delicate pink flowers and can be pleasantly fragrant, with a light, sweet scent reminiscent of freesia. The plant can flower repeatedly when grown under suitable conditions.
Some plants of Liu's Triprince 'Pink' are also known in the distinctive peloric form, in which the flowers develop a more symmetrical, butterfly-like appearance. This makes the peloric form particularly interesting for orchid collectors.
At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, I particularly like Phalaenopsis hybrids with a stronger botanical background and a character of their own. Liu's Triprince 'Pink' is a good example: compact, fragrant and much more individual than a standard commercial Phalaenopsis.
