There are Philodendrons that immediately reveal their climbing nature. Philodendron campii is different.
Usually growing with a short stem and a more or less rosette-like arrangement of erect to spreading leaves, it develops a remarkably architectural form. The foliage is deep green, elongated and leathery, with pronounced lateral venation that gives the leaf surface a distinctly ribbed or quilted appearance.
The plant is particularly interesting to collectors because the name ‘Lynette’ has a long horticultural history. For decades, this plant circulated in cultivation under that name and was even considered to be a hybrid. Botanical work later established that the plant belongs to a naturally occurring species from tropical South America: Philodendron campii Croat.
It is therefore a plant with an unusual combination of qualities: a genuine botanical species, a distinctive growth habit, a fascinating history in cultivation and foliage that becomes increasingly impressive as the plant matures.
Botanical Background
Philodendron campii belongs to the family Araceae, the arum family, and is native to wet tropical regions of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and northern Brazil. It occurs primarily in tropical moist, wet and pluvial forest habitats. The species is usually epiphytic, although it may also occur terrestrially at higher elevations.
Its natural growth habit helps explain the plant's appearance in cultivation. Rather than producing a long, vigorous climbing stem like many familiar Philodendrons, P. campii has relatively short internodes and leaves that form a compact, spreading structure. The species is described as having a usually rosulate habit, with a short stem and erect to spreading leaves.
The leaves are subcoriaceous and semi-glossy, with numerous primary lateral veins. In mature specimens, these veins become an important part of the plant's character: the foliage is not simply green, but structurally marked by the repeated rhythm of its venation.
The species was formally described by Thomas B. Croat in 2004. The epithet campii commemorates botanist Wendell Holmes Camp, whose 1944 collection from Ecuador contributed to the species' botanical history.

What I find particularly interesting about Philodendron campii is that its appeal becomes clearer with time. As a young plant, the leaves can be appreciated for their colour and texture. With maturity, however, the whole plant begins to reveal its real character: the short stem, the arrangement of the leaves and the repeated pattern of the lateral veins become as important as the individual leaf.
It is also a good example of why horticultural names should sometimes be treated with a little caution. The name ‘Lynette’ existed in cultivation long before the plant was formally recognised as Philodendron campii. Historically, it was even considered to be a hybrid. Botanical examination showed otherwise. The plant's history therefore reflects something that occurs frequently in the world of cultivated aroids: a plant may circulate for decades under a familiar horticultural name before its natural botanical identity is properly understood.
Cultivation Guide
Light
Provide bright, filtered light or bright indirect light.
The species comes from wet tropical forest environments, but bright light remains important for maintaining strong growth and well-formed foliage. A position with good ambient light is preferable to deep shade. Harsh, intense midday sun through glass can damage the leaves, particularly when a plant has been grown under more sheltered conditions.
Temperature
Warm, stable temperatures are best.
As a tropical Philodendron, P. campii should be protected from cold conditions and sudden temperature drops. Growth naturally slows when root temperatures fall, even if the plant still appears visually healthy.
Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the substrate to become moderately drier before watering again.
The aim is not to keep the root system permanently wet. The plant's natural epiphytic tendency is important here: roots require access to both moisture and oxygen. A constantly saturated, airless substrate can damage roots even when the surrounding humidity is high.
The correct interval depends on pot size, substrate structure, temperature, light and root development. A fixed calendar schedule is therefore less useful than observing the actual drying behaviour of the pot.
Humidity
Moderate to high atmospheric humidity is beneficial, particularly in warm conditions.
However, humidity alone does not compensate for poor root aeration. In cultivation, stable conditions are generally more valuable than attempting to maintain an extreme humidity level while the roots remain in a poorly structured substrate.
Substrate
Use a very permeable, structurally stable substrate with good air space around the roots.
A suitable mix may include components such as:
- quality organic material;
- coarse bark;
- pumice or another mineral drainage component;
- additional material that maintains air-filled pore space over time.
The exact composition is less important than the physical behaviour of the finished substrate. It should hold sufficient moisture for the roots without collapsing into a dense, airless mass.
Fertiliser
Feed moderately during active growth.
Philodendron campii does not need to be pushed with excessive fertilisation. Heavy feeding may produce rapid, soft growth while creating unnecessary salt accumulation around the roots.
A balanced, dilute fertiliser applied during active growth is generally preferable to repeated heavy applications. The plant's long-term quality depends more on balanced light, healthy roots and stable cultivation than on maximum growth speed.
Repotting
Repot when the root system has substantially occupied the existing container or when the substrate has begun to lose its structure.
Avoid repotting simply because a particular calendar date has arrived. A plant with a healthy, functioning root system often benefits from being left undisturbed.
When repotting, preserve as much of the healthy root system as practical and avoid moving the plant into a disproportionately large container. Excess substrate around a relatively small root system dries slowly and can increase the risk of prolonged saturation.
Propagation
Propagation is possible through vegetative division or stem material where suitable growth points are available. Seed propagation is also possible following successful pollination.
As with many aroids, sexual reproduction requires more than simply allowing an inflorescence to open. Philodendron inflorescences have a specialised flowering sequence, and successful pollination depends on the timing of pollen availability and stigma receptivity.
For collectors, seed-grown material is particularly interesting because it represents sexual recombination rather than a genetic copy of the mother plant.
Dormancy
Philodendron campii does not require a true winter dormancy under suitable indoor conditions.
Growth may slow during darker and cooler periods. During this phase, watering and fertilisation should be adjusted to the actual rate at which the plant is using water rather than maintained at a summer schedule.

Keeping the substrate wet for too long
The roots need oxygen as well as moisture.
Growing the plant in deep shade
The plant may survive, but growth becomes weaker and the foliage may not develop its best form.
Over-fertilising
Fast growth is not necessarily strong growth.
Using a very large pot
A large volume of slowly drying substrate can create a less favourable root environment.
