Plumeria Rubra - Frangipani | The Iconic Tropical Tree with Fragrant Flowers

Opening Introduction

Plumeria rubra, commonly known as Frangipani, is one of the world's most admired tropical flowering plants. Native to Central America and widely cultivated throughout tropical and subtropical regions, this beautiful species is cherished for its intensely fragrant flowers, elegant growth habit, and remarkable diversity of flower colours.

Whether grown on a sunny patio, balcony, conservatory, or bright indoor windowsill, Plumeria rubra immediately creates a tropical atmosphere. Its thick succulent-like branches, seasonal foliage, and spectacular blooms make it equally attractive to beginners and experienced collectors alike.

At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, we particularly appreciate Plumeria rubra for its combination of ornamental beauty, resilience, and long lifespan. Mature plants become increasingly impressive over time, rewarding their owner with larger crowns, more branches, and ever more abundant flowering displays.

Collector Note

Among tropical flowering plants, few species enjoy the worldwide popularity of Plumeria rubra. Collectors appreciate not only the beauty of its flowers but also the incredible diversity available within the species. Thousands of named cultivars exist, producing flowers in shades of white, yellow, pink, red, orange, apricot, and multicoloured combinations.

One fascinating characteristic is that flower colour intensity often varies depending on growing conditions. Plants receiving abundant direct sunlight frequently develop deeper and richer flower colours than those grown in lower light conditions.

Unlike many tropical flowering plants, Plumeria rubra combines spectacular flowering with relatively straightforward cultivation. Given sufficient sunlight and excellent drainage, it remains one of the most rewarding tropical collector plants available.

Care

Light:
Plumeria rubra thrives in the brightest location available. Full sun is strongly recommended for vigorous growth and reliable flowering.

Watering:
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the substrate to partially dry between waterings. Avoid waterlogging at all times.

Humidity:
Average household humidity is generally sufficient.

Temperature:
Warm temperatures between 20–35°C are ideal during the growing season. Protect from frost.

Substrate:
A highly permeable and well-drained substrate is essential. Excellent root aeration is key to long-term success.

Maintenance:
Minimal maintenance is required. Occasional pruning encourages branching and a fuller crown.

Additional cultivation tips:
Plumeria rubra naturally enters winter dormancy between approximately November and February. During this period, the plant may shed some or all of its leaves. This is completely normal and should not be mistaken for a problem. Water significantly less during dormancy and resume regular watering when new growth emerges in spring.

For best results, place the plant outdoors in full sun during the warmer months. A sunny balcony, terrace, or patio often dramatically improves growth and flowering performance.

Cultivated with Care at TOMs FLOWer CLUB

Every Plumeria rubra offered by TOMs FLOWer CLUB is cultivated according to our simple philosophy:

100% organic quality before quantity.

Our plants are never pushed through intensive production methods or excessive fertilisation. Instead, they are grown steadily and naturally to develop strong roots, healthy branches, and long-term resilience.

The offered plants are fully established, propagated from stem cuttings, and cultivated in a specially developed self-mixed organic substrate designed specifically for Plumeria cultivation. The mixture provides excellent drainage while maintaining sufficient moisture retention for healthy root development.

We strongly recommend repotting only after 1–2 years, ideally into a larger clay pot that provides both stability and room for continued natural development.

No leaf gloss products, unnecessary sprays, or artificial cosmetic treatments are used.
