Sansevieria Trifasciata ‘Robusta’ | Snake Plant | Own Propagation

Strong, naturally grown Sansevieria from my own collection

Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Robusta’ is a particularly robust and architectural form of the well-known Snake Plant. The species is botanically classified today as Dracaena trifasciata, although the traditional name Sansevieria trifasciata remains widely used among growers and collectors.

The plants offered here come directly from my own Sansevieria collection and have been propagated by division of the mother plant and established rhizome.

These are strong, fully established and top-robust plants, not young, freshly separated offsets. They have been cultivated slowly and naturally and are already well rooted and ready to continue growing in their new home.

The plants are grown in a specially formulated, highly permeable Sansevieria-tailored soil mixture, providing excellent drainage and sufficient air around the roots and rhizomes.

For me, this is an important part of good Sansevieria cultivation: the plant should be strong because of its healthy root and rhizome system — not because it has been pushed with excessive water or fertiliser.

Why I particularly like this plant

  • Strong, upright and architectural growth
  • Naturally robust and drought-tolerant
  • Propagated from my own mother plant
  • Propagation by rhizome division
  • Fully established and well rooted
  • Strong, healthy foliage
  • Capable of producing further offsets naturally
  • Cultivated without excessive fertilisation
  • Growing in a specially tailored, highly permeable Sansevieria substrate
  • Excellent long-term indoor plant

Cultivation & Care

Light

A bright position is ideal. Several hours of gentle direct sunlight are beneficial and help maintain strong, compact growth. The plant will tolerate lower light, but growth will generally be slower.

Water

This is where many Sansevierias are treated incorrectly.

Allow the substrate to dry thoroughly between waterings. The succulent leaves and underground rhizome store water, allowing the plant to cope very well with periods of dryness.

During winter, watering should be reduced considerably.

The main risk is not too little water — it is cold, permanently wet soil and poor drainage.

Substrate

Excellent drainage is essential.

The plant offered here is already growing in a Sansevieria-tailored, highly permeable soil mixture, specifically selected to prevent excessive water retention around the roots and rhizome.

Temperature

Keep warm and completely frost-free. Normal indoor temperatures are suitable.

During winter, avoid combining low temperatures with wet soil.

Fertilisation

Moderate feeding during active growth is sufficient. Sansevierias are relatively slow-growing and do not benefit from excessive fertilisation.

Repotting

There is no need to repot frequently. Sansevierias generally tolerate being somewhat root-bound.

As the rhizome produces new shoots, the plant can gradually develop into a larger natural clump. I prefer to allow these offsets to establish properly rather than separating them too early.

My Cultivation Approach at TOMs FLOWer CLUB

My Sansevieria collection contains more than 100 species, forms and cultivars, and over many years I have learned that these plants respond best to patient, natural cultivation.

The plants offered here are:

propagated from my own mother plant • divided from an established rhizome • fully established • strong & robust • not excessively fertilised • grown in a specially formulated, highly permeable Sansevieria soil

I do not aim to produce the fastest-growing Sansevieria. I prefer healthy plants with firm foliage and a properly developed root and rhizome system.

This is what I mean by:

Quality before quantity.
