Ledebouria Socialis 'Albo-Variegata' (Scilla violacea) – White Variegated Silver Squill
A particularly beautiful variegated form of Ledebouria socialis, widely known in horticulture as Scilla violacea. This unusual South African bulbous plant is especially valued for its striking foliage, with the characteristic silver-green, mottled leaves enhanced by attractive white variegation.
The botanical name Scilla violacea is now considered a synonym of the accepted name Ledebouria socialis. Native to South Africa, this small geophytic bulb forms attractive clumps over time, with the bulbs naturally sitting partly above the substrate. Its unusual foliage is the main attraction, while delicate flowers add an additional seasonal feature.
This Albo-Variegata specimen was propagated organically by division from my own healthy mother plant and has been carefully cultivated at TOMs FLOWer CLUB. It has not been pushed with excessive fertiliser, resulting in a healthy, robust and naturally developed plant. At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, 100% organic quality comes before quantity.
The plant is already established in TOM's own self-mixed, highly permeable organic substrate. Repotting is only necessary in approximately 1–2 years, unless you specifically wish to divide the bulbs or move the plant into another pot. Waterlogging should always be avoided.
Give your Ledebouria socialis 'Albo-Variegata' a bright to sunny position and allow the substrate to dry appropriately between waterings. It appreciates good drainage and is particularly well suited to pot culture, conservatories and other bright indoor growing spaces. During its resting period, watering should be reduced rather than keeping the bulbs constantly wet.
This is not a frost-hardy plant. In Switzerland, it should be protected from freezing temperatures and excessive winter moisture. A cool, bright and unheated conservatory can be an excellent winter location as long as temperatures remain safely above freezing.
With its compact growth, unusual bulb structure and beautiful white-variegated foliage, Ledebouria socialis 'Albo-Variegata' is an excellent collector's plant for anyone interested in unusual bulbs, variegated plants and South African succulents and geophytes.
A small plant with a surprisingly strong presence – and one that becomes increasingly attractive as it develops into a larger clump.
