Woodwardia prolifera – Proliferous Chain Fern
A striking East Asian fern with large, elegant fronds and an unusual way of reproducing: tiny plantlets can develop directly on mature fronds. Woodwardia prolifera brings a lush, woodland character to a sheltered garden corner or a spacious container in a shaded position.
Why This Plant Stands Out
-
Large, arching fronds that create a lush, architectural presence.
-
Young growth can show attractive bronze, reddish or coppery tones before maturing to green.
-
Small plantlets may develop on the upper surface of mature fronds, giving this fern its name and offering a fascinating way to propagate it.
-
An unusual choice for fern collectors and gardeners who appreciate distinctive foliage plants.
Plant Characteristics
Botanical name: Woodwardia prolifera
Common name: Proliferous Chain Fern
Plant type: Evergreen to semi-evergreen fern, depending on conditions
Origin: East Asia
Mature size: Approximately 1–1.5 m tall, with a spread that can reach around 1.5–2.5 m in suitable conditions
Foliage: Large, finely divided green fronds; new growth may show reddish or bronze tones
Growth habit: Clump-forming, with plantlets sometimes developing on mature fronds
Collector Note
The most fascinating feature of Woodwardia prolifera is its ability to produce small plantlets on mature fronds. These can sometimes be encouraged to root and grow into new plants. Plantlet formation varies with growing conditions, so it should be seen as a special possibility rather than a guarantee.
Cultivation & Care
Light: Partial shade to shade. Protect the foliage from strong midday and afternoon sun.
Water: Keep the substrate consistently moist, but never waterlogged. Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
Substrate: Humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage.
Humidity: Appreciates a sheltered position with naturally higher humidity.
Hardiness: This fern has limited frost tolerance. In Switzerland, outdoor cultivation is best attempted in a mild, sheltered location. Prolonged or severe frost can damage the plant. Container cultivation with winter protection is the safer option in colder areas.
Winter care: Protect from cold winds and prolonged freezing. For potted plants, move the fern to a cool, bright, frost-protected place during cold periods.
