Propagating Sansevieria Through Leaf Cuttings – A Simple & Rewarding Method
Sansevieria, also known as snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue, is one of the easiest and most rewarding houseplants to grow – and just as easy to propagate!
At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, we grow and propagate all our Sansevierias organically, without rushing, over-fertilising, or mass production. If you’ve ever wanted to multiply your Sansevieria – or grow one from a single leaf – this guide is for you.
Why Propagate Sansevieria by Leaf Cuttings?
* No need to divide the whole plant – a single leaf is enough

* Ideal for varieties that don’t produce runners
Note: For variegated Sansevieria (those with yellow or white edges), leaf propagation often results in all-green plants. They’re still beautiful – just not variegated.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Propagate by Leaf Cuttings
1. Choose a healthy leaf
Pick a strong, undamaged leaf from your plant – the healthier and thicker, the better your success rate
2. Cut into sections
Using a clean knife or scissors, cut the leaf into **5–10 cm (2–4 inch) long pieces**. Important: **remember which end is the bottom** – only one side will root.
3. Let the cuttings dry
Place the pieces in a dry, well-ventilated spot for 2–3 days to allow the cut surfaces to callous over. This helps prevent rotting later.
4. Plant in well-drained substrate
Insert the bottom end of each piece into a well-drained, lightly moist organic mix, about 2–3 cm deep. At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, we use a special mix of:
> Organic, self-mixed substrate made from airy potting soil, pumice, coconut fiber, and sand – just like all the Sansevierias we offer.
5. Provide bright, indirect light – and patience!
Place your pots in a bright but not sunny location. Keep the substrate slightly moist but never wet. After 6–10 weeks, roots will begin to form – and eventually tiny new leaves will sprout.

* Best season: spring or summer for faster rooting
* Be patient – Sansevierias are slow growers, but very steady
* Don’t fertilize in the first 4–6 months – let the plant grow stress-free, organically
